Disney and Motorola teamed up to develop a handheld, computerized guide to the Epcot theme park. Their goal: reinforce the concept that the public can "see technology at Epcot’s Innoventions that they can’t see anywhere else." Motorola, in turn, relied on Ratio’s technological expertise to quickly realize the vision and potential of this unique device.

In response, Ratio developed the "Imaginavigator," a palm-sized, programmable messaging device. It features a friendly design and an interactive map of the park to serve as the user interface.

Visitors use intuitive navigation buttons to move easily through this geographical layout, learning about attractions, restaurants, and stores near their present location. The guide provides schedules and waiting times for popular events, coupons for restaurants and retail stores. Guests can also use Imnav to email other members of their parties. In developing the ImagiNavigator (Imnav), Ratio’s team saved time by working with existing software and hardware technologies Ratio had previously developed for Motorola. The Imnav features a 240 x 160 pixel LCD screen to display the text and graphics. (more more ->)

A FLEX™ paging receiver periodically collects updated information about the park, using AirScript, a dynamic information-publishing language developed by Ratio. The Imnav’s ARM®/Thumb™ processor is powerful enough to handle database manipulation, animation, and other intensive tasks.

The device accomplishes each of the project goals, using technology to enhance the experience of Epcot’s visitors. Disney has conducted a successful pilot test with 200 units in the hands of park guests, and has fueled a dramatic increase in retail sales throughout the park with the electronic coupons.
