RATIO's response to COVID-19 in review: Critical Designing and Printing on Demand

As a product designer at RATIO Product Lab, I have always been passionate about creating innovative solutions that make a positive impact on people's lives. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, it presented a unique challenge and an opportunity for us to leverage our skills and expertise to help our local community and healthcare staff in Atlanta.

The Call for Action

The early days of the pandemic were filled with uncertainty and fear. The shortage of personal protection equipment (PPE) for healthcare workers was a pressing issue across the nation. It was then that our team came together to brainstorm how we could use our design and manufacturing capabilities to contribute to the collective effort against the virus.

Embracing 3D Printing Technology

As a team of product designers, engineers, and makers, we recognized the potential of 3D printing to quickly produce much-needed PPE. With its versatility and ability to create intricate designs, 3D printing emerged as a powerful tool in our fight against COVID-19. We knew that by leveraging this technology, we could rapidly manufacture face shields that meet the required safety standards.

Collaboration and Community Spirit

One of the most inspiring aspects of this journey was collaborating with fellow Georgia residents who shared our passion for helping the community. Together, we formed a network of like-minded individuals and organizations, pooling our resources and expertise to maximize our impact. This spirit of unity fueled our determination to make a difference.

Designing with Purpose

Designing the face shields was not just about creating a functional piece of equipment; it was about ensuring the safety and comfort of the healthcare professionals who would wear them for extended periods. We prioritized feedback from healthcare workers and used their insights to iterate and refine the design. Comfortable headbands, adjustable straps, and optically clear visors became essential elements of our face shields.

Supporting the Frontlines

With the prototypes finalized, our team worked tirelessly to scale up production. The 3D printers hummed with activity, creating batches of face shields to be distributed to hospitals in critical need. Each face shield that came off the production line carried a sense of purpose and urgency; it represented protection for those who were working tirelessly on the frontlines to save lives.

Swift Local Distribution

Understanding the urgency of the situation, we made it a priority to distribute the face shields locally. Our goal was to minimize delivery time and ensure that the PPE reached healthcare facilities promptly. Witnessing the impact of our efforts firsthand as healthcare workers received the face shields was incredibly rewarding and motivating.

A Testament to Resilience

Looking back at our journey in the fight against COVID-19, I am immensely proud of the resilience and dedication our team demonstrated. Despite the challenges, we never wavered from our commitment to supporting the community and healthcare workers.

Conclusion

As a product designer, the experience of contributing to the fight against COVID-19 has been profoundly fulfilling. Our journey with RATIO Product Lab exemplifies the power of design thinking, collaboration, and innovation in addressing real-world challenges. We are reminded that, as designers, we have a responsibility to use our skills to make a positive impact on society. Our fight against COVID-19 continues, but we are steadfast in our mission to design for a better, safer world.
